Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix Review

In the vast universe of animated series, “Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix” caught my eye and swiftly made its way to my Netflix watchlist. Its vibrant visuals and cyberpunk undertones immediately reminded me of “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners”. My anticipation was further heightened knowing that Adi Shankar, the creative genius behind another Netflix favourite of mine, “Castlevania,” was at the helm of this project.
The show transports us to 1992, but not the one we remember. In this alternate history, the United States has been transformed into Eden, a dystopian technocracy under the iron grip of a megacorporation bearing the same name. This world is not just inhabited by humans but also by artificially created anthropomorphic animals known as hybrids, adding layers of complexity to societal dynamics. At the heart of the story is Dolph Laserhawk, a supersoldier and a fugitive modified by Eden Tech Military. During a pivotal heist, he is betrayed, captured and incarcerated in Eden’s most dreaded facility, the Supermaxx prison. Sarah Fisher, Supermaxx’s warden puts him in with a group of captive rebels with explosives implanted in their heads, forcing them to do her bidding, reminiscent of Amanda Waller in The Suicide Squad.
The rebel group called Ghosts and other characters in this show are brilliantly woven from various Ubisoft games, each reimagined for the show’s dystopian narrative. Dolph Laserhawk stands as a fugitive supersoldier, while Sarah Fisher from Splinter Cell oversees the Supermaxx prison. The mysterious French assassin Bullfrog draws inspiration from Assassin’s Creed and is one of my favourite characters. Rayman is an alien newscaster pushing the propaganda of Eden. Marcus Holloway from Watch Dogs 2, leading an anti-Eden resistance. Another character that I loved seeing was Sam Fisher, who is a badass! Together, these characters create a narrative that’s both nostalgic and refreshingly new.
The animation & visuals of this show stand out. Drawing inspiration from the neon-soaked aesthetics of the 1980s and games like “Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon,” the show is delightfully different, jumping to 8-bit retro transitions of old video games and pixelated live-action sequences. The show moves at a thrilling pace, fast and full of action with each episode just 20 minutes long. Season 1 with just 6 episodes is barely enough, top it off with an insane cliffhanger and I can’t wait for Season 2 of Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix!!
