I missed out on Dune Part 1 by Denis Villeneuve in the theatres and finally watched it when it came out on Netflix… I’m a bookworm and a fan of science fiction, so I was aware of Dune by Frank Herbert but the book was too intimidating to get into. I was impressed by the first Dune movie, the acting, the cinematography, the score and the scale of the movie were just mindblowing. Watching the movie eased me into the story and the characters and it got me curious about the story of Dune. The book always dives deeper than any movie ever can. I finally finished the 22-hour-long audiobook and enjoyed every minute of it. I was also glad that I finished it just before I watched Dune — Part 2.
From the moment the screen flickers to life, “Dune: Part Two” envelops you in a world where the vast, unforgiving deserts of Arrakis. This sequel not only meets the astronomical expectations set by its predecessor but transcends them. The lengthy runtime doesn’t make the movie feel long… In fact, I could’ve watched another hour of it.
Villeneuve’s mastery is evident in every frame, every cut of this monumental film. His ability to blend story with spectacle ensures that “Dune: Part Two” is not just seen but experienced. The visual storytelling in “Dune: Part Two” is nothing short of breathtaking. Greig Fraser’s cinematography captures the raw beauty and harshness of Arrakis, using a palette that reflects the planet’s dual nature — its potential for life and its promise of death. Each scene is a masterpiece, from the sweeping landscapes that stretch into eternity to the close-ups that reveal the intricacy of individual grains of sand.
The film’s pacing is deliberate, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the world and its characters. The transitions between scenes are seamless, creating a narrative flow that is both dynamic and coherent. Everything feels bigger and better.
The ending is slightly different from the one in the book but that is expected. As the final credits roll and the lights in the theatre rise, you’re left with the realization that you’ve not just watched a movie; you’ve been on a journey. “Dune: Part Two” is a beacon of cinematic excellence, a film that will be discussed and admired for years to come. It is, without a doubt, a must-see for anyone who believes in the power of movies to take us beyond the boundaries of our world and into the realms of the extraordinary. The story is far from over and I’m hoping that Denis Villeneuve will come back for the next one.
