The Guest List by Lucy Foley [Book Review]
The Guest List by Lucy Foley is Goodreads Choice 2020 winner in Mystery & Thriller series. So, going in I had high expectations, and I enjoyed it very much.
Will and Jules are getting married. They are a successful and good-looking couple. Will has a TV show called Survivor and Jules runs a fashion magazine called The Download. They hold the wedding ceremony on a remote island to make it more exclusive and honor Jules’s Italian heritage.
The island is quite a place with a bog, steep cliffs, choppy sea surrounding it, and less than ideal weather. The remote location, wedding party, and unlimited booze are also the perfect setting for everyone to let their hair down and enjoy the weekend without any responsibility.
Some of the noteworthy characters in the wedding party are Jule’s Halfsister, Olivia, her best friend Charlie, and Charlie’s wife, Hanna. On Will’s side, we have his friends who studied in a posh private school and are a rowdy bunch, indulging in drinks and drugs.
The story starts on the wedding night at the party which is interrupted because of shoddy weather and someone’s probably hurt, possibly murdered (wink, wink)… from there it’s like peeling layers of an onion. The story moves back and forth between the wedding night and the previous day… narrating the events that unfold from multiple character’s points of view and also giving us a glimpse into their psyche.
Kudos to Lucy Foley for structuring the story in a way that neither the victim nor the perpetrator is revealed until the very last few chapters. And even there was a surprise twist that I did not see coming.
5/5⭐ — Definitely recommended.
